After an E. coli outbreak cost the lives of five people in the USA and tracing the source proved extremely difficult for authorities, nonprofit organization ‘The Pew Charitable Trusts’ now demands significantly improved product traceability for food. One of the problems for the authorities were incomplete or handwritten records, which take a lot of time to check. US Congress directed the Food and Drug Administration to establish minimum requirements for the traceability of products as early as 2011, but those haven’t been implemented yet.
